Drug Testing Moves from High Schools to College

As limited drug testing makes its way into high schools in Missouri, one college has taken the lead in testing at that level. Linn State Technical College is testing all their first year students and intends to keep doing so despite the possibility of a lawsuit.

While other colleges and most high schools only test athletes or do breathalyzers at dances and school functions, Linn State is going to do an across the board sweep. According to the college’s attorney, “It does appear that our program is unique in its scope and breadth.”

School administrators feel the testing is warranted for several reasons. The first has to do with the hands on training at a technical college. With courses like aircraft and heavy engine repair, they feel that testing will make classes safer. But that wouldn’t explain the entire student body getting tested. The other rationale is that this will prepare them for the workforce, where drug screening is part of being employed.

Still, there are objections that the testing (or as school officials refer to it, “screening”) is an invasion of privacy and the school has no right to regulate the off campus activities of its students. The lawsuits haven’t been filed yet, but they are expected. The ACLU has often backed no-testing arguments in courts at the high school level and can be expected to side with the students in this fight as well.

Students who fail the drug test will be allowed to continue classes and have to retest clean after 45 days. This will be followed up by an unannounced test later in the semester. But what may end up being the most controversial of all – students have to pay to take the tests. $50 each.

The ACLU complaint can be found here.
